Evidence & current status

Primary DRDO indexed technical text was available but direct PDF fetch returned 404. No new official acceptance or delivery evidence established; historical research data is clearly dated.

MUNTRA, short for Mission Unmanned Tracked, is a DRDO research programme for converting BMP-II class tracked vehicles to remote and autonomous operation. The Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment developed the vehicle programme with other DRDO laboratories, including work on autonomous navigation with CAIR. It provides an important Indian example of converting an established military chassis rather than designing a small robot from scratch.

DRDO's technical account separates MUNTRA-S surveillance, MUNTRA-M mine detection and marking, and MUNTRA-N nuclear, biological and chemical reconnaissance. MUNTRA-B is the supporting base/control vehicle; it should not be counted as another uncrewed mission platform. The programme includes drive-by-wire controls, navigation sensing and mission-specific equipment.

The 2018 publication documents demonstrations and field trials, including the surveillance payload's earlier validation. It does not establish a present production fleet. Searches for newer material returned press-clipping collections, which are not equivalent to DRDO acceptance announcements. This profile therefore retains a development/trials label and does not transfer BMP-II crewed-vehicle specifications to the converted robots.
