Company and industrial base

Skydio, Inc. is a U.S. drone and autonomy company founded in 2014, according to its corporate history. It lists its headquarters in San Mateo, California. The company says it designs, assembles and supports its products in the United States, with X10D manufacture at its Hayward facility.

Its background in computer vision is relevant to the way it presents its aircraft: onboard perception and flight software are central parts of the product. The company history records its founders' earlier work on Google's Project Wing, but this profile covers Skydio's own aircraft and software business, not the Wing delivery-drone operation.

Portfolio and integration

The commercial X10 and defence-oriented X10D sit alongside software for remote operations and mapping, and a docking system for X10. These products have different configurations and intended uses; a feature advertised for one version should not automatically be attributed to another.

The X10D product page describes visual and thermal sensing, onboard navigation assistance and support for third-party controllers, including Tomahawk products. Skydio's 2025 delivery announcement identifies Teledyne FLIR's Boson+ thermal sensor. These are concrete supplier and compatibility relationships, rather than evidence that Skydio manufactures every component internally.

Army programme evidence

The U.S. Army's December 2025 release states that initial X10D fielding began in April 2025 for an urgent operational requirement. It identifies Skydio as one of the vendors selected for Short Range Reconnaissance systems. That wording matters: participation does not imply an exclusive supplier position across the programme.

On 22 March 2026 Skydio announced a further Army order for more than 2,500 X10D aircraft, valued above $52 million and placed through Atlantic Diving Supply. The order amount and quantity are manufacturer-reported procurement details. They should not be converted into a universal aircraft price or taken to mean that every ordered system has been delivered.

Expansion and source limits

In April 2026 Skydio announced a five-year U.S. manufacturing, research and supply-chain investment plan. The announcement describes intended expansion, not spending already completed or proven future production capacity.

Government programme statements, manufacturer delivery announcements and product specifications answer different questions. Claims about navigation in difficult environments or electronic-warfare resilience require the relevant software, radio configuration and test conditions to be identified. They are not blanket guarantees of mission success. For buyers and researchers, the useful distinction is between an available product feature, a delivered system, a planned upgrade and an independently documented operational result.
