Evidence & current status

HUGIN Superior is Kongsberg's high-end autonomous survey vehicle for detailed seabed imaging. It brings synthetic-aperture sonar, multibeam mapping and additional optical or environmental instruments into one untethered platform. Defence applications include mine countermeasures and environmental assessment; commercial survey is another market. Its place in a defence catalogue therefore rests on published mission applications, rather than an assumption that every customer is a navy.
The manufacturer's data sheet gives a 6,000-metre depth rating and endurance baselines of 72 hours at three knots or 52 hours at four knots, with payloads active for 90 per cent of the mission. These specific conditions matter when comparing it with smaller AUVs. The system includes launch and recovery equipment and mission support facilities, not simply the vehicle. Kongsberg's February 2024 US Defense Innovation Unit agreement covered a prototype project involving HUGIN technology; the announcement described potential future Navy acquisition. It does not establish operational Navy acceptance of every Superior configuration.
