Airborne electronic-support flight test

GA-ASI reports Gray Eagle ER electronic-support flight test

General Atomics says it completed flight testing of SNC's electronic-support sensor on the MQ-1C Gray Eagle ER. The announcement gives no flight data, Army acceptance decision or fielding schedule.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) announced on 15 October that it had completed flight testing of an SNC electronic-support-measures (ESM) system on the MQ-1C Gray Eagle Extended Range uncrewed aircraft. The US Army is considering long-range sensing upgrades to the aircraft. The company's statement supports a completed integration and flight-test milestone, but does not say the Army has selected the payload for production or accepted it for operational use.

What electronic support adds

An ESM receiver detects and collects electromagnetic emissions. On a long-endurance aircraft, such sensing can help operators locate and characterize emitting systems, including elements of an integrated air-defence network, from beyond some threat areas. GA-ASI describes the SNC equipment as a small detection-and-collection system and argues that Gray Eagle's open architecture makes payload integration easier. Those are supplier descriptions. The release does not identify the sensor's frequency coverage, detection range, geolocation precision, test location or number of sorties.

The company links the upgrade to Army interest in supplying commanders with information for operations against hostile air defences and in supporting crewed-uncrewed teaming. Flight testing establishes that an integrated configuration flew; it does not by itself prove detection at a specified range, survivability outside a particular weapon engagement zone, a deployed targeting chain or coordination with crewed aircraft in combat. The announcement gives no measured results against representative emitters.

Next evidence

An Army test report, named programme decision, procurement order or operational assessment would clarify whether this payload progresses beyond the demonstration. For now the original manufacturer report documents an ESM flight test on Gray Eagle ER, with performance and adoption still unquantified. The site's Gray Eagle library profile, long-endurance aircraft sector and prototype-to-service guide give context for assessing later milestones.
