Ocius Technology announced on 4 November that it had contracted Japanese marine-robotics company Seisgadget to support performance verification of its Bluebottle uncrewed surface vessels for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The companies' contract commenced in August 2026. The new announcement identifies a Japanese evaluation pathway; it does not report a new JMSDF fleet order, completed verification or service acceptance.
What the programme will examine
Ocius says the programme will conduct in-water testing and acceptance activities in Australia to assess Bluebottle's ability to sustain maritime and undersea surveillance. The vessels for the programme are to be built at Ocius's Sydney facility. Bluebottle uses wind, solar and wave energy for long-duration surface operation and can carry sensors for above-water and underwater monitoring. The mission fit, number of vessels, test schedule and evaluation thresholds for Japan were not disclosed.
The JMSDF interest is separate from Australia's March 2026 investment in 40 additional Bluebottles. That Australian procurement should not be counted as a Japanese order. Nor does the verification contract mean the JMSDF has accepted Bluebottle into routine service.
Evidence and next step
The contract is between Ocius and Seisgadget, according to the supplier announcement. Ocius and trade reporting describe a forthcoming verification programme, but no measured Japanese trial result is yet public. A JMSDF or Japanese procurement release, completed in-water results and an acceptance or purchase decision would clarify the system's status in Japan.
