The Royal Navy reported on 5 November that Callen-Lenz Nyan Maritime one-way attack drones launched from HMS Queen Elizabeth during North Atlantic trials in mid-October. It says the carrier conducted a number of flights, describing these as the first strike-drone launches from a British aircraft carrier. The Nyan had previously launched at sea from the experimental vessel XV Patrick Blackett. The new milestone is launch from the larger carrier and associated deck operations, not first-ever launch from any Royal Navy ship.
Two aircraft roles in the carrier trial
The Navy also says a TEKEVER AR5 fixed-wing aircraft operated from the carrier during Heavy Lift Challenge 3. Its account presents the AR5 as a potential intelligence, surveillance and logistics platform. The Nyan flights explored an expendable strike role. Placing these different aircraft on the same carrier shows the range of roles the Navy is examining for a future hybrid air wing, but the announcement does not establish a coordinated strike mission between them or routine use alongside F-35B aircraft.
What remains to be shown
The Navy does not give sortie counts, launch or recovery methods for the AR5, aircraft configurations, ranges, payloads flown, target effects or an independent test report. Its statement says the trials will inform future carrier-strike decisions. Project Pantheon funding and planned drone investment are programme context, not evidence that Nyan or AR5 has been accepted for operational carrier service. Follow-on deck trials, safety approval and a procurement decision would establish the next stage.
