Counter-UAS contract vehicle

Leonardo DRS joins US counter-UAS sensing contract vehicle

Leonardo DRS says it received a three-year JIATF-401 IDIQ with a $500 million ceiling and may compete for counter-UAS sensing task orders. The ceiling is not a funded DRS order or a delivery total.

Leonardo DRS announced on 14 October that it received an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract from the US Joint Interagency Task Force 401 for tactical expeditionary sensing in the counter-uncrewed-aircraft mission. The company describes a three-year period of performance and a $500 million ceiling. It says the award makes DRS eligible to compete for future task orders. The ceiling defines the maximum value available under the contract vehicle; the announcement does not establish that DRS has received $500 million in funded work.

What the vehicle covers

JIATF-401 intends the vehicle to speed access to vetted counter-UAS technologies. DRS identifies integrated sensing for force protection and low-altitude air defence as the relevant work. Its RADA business makes tactical radar systems, but the release does not name a radar model, a configuration, an installation site or a quantity ordered under this vehicle. Detection and tracking are one layer of a counter-UAS system; a sensor contract should not be read as a new interceptor deployment or a complete defeat capability.

An IDIQ creates a route for subsequent orders. Each task order can define a specific requirement, value and delivery schedule. The company's statement does not identify an initial task order, obligated amount, delivery date, new trial result or service acceptance arising from this award. Its broad claims about existing radar performance are supplier assertions rather than measured outcomes of the new contract.

The next substantive evidence would be an attributable task order showing which sensors, integration work and users were funded, followed by delivery or operational assessment. Until then this is a counter-UAS procurement-channel milestone, not a $500 million purchase of fielded equipment. The site's counter-UAS sector and prototype-to-service guide explain how sensing, integration, orders and acceptance differ.
