Counter-UAS procurement framework

NATO opens counter-drone marketplace with 16 selected solutions

NATO says its new counter-UAS marketplace lists 16 competitively selected solutions from five firms under multi-award frameworks. Listing enables faster Allied procurement; it is not an order by every member or acceptance of every configuration.

NATO announced on 5 November that it had launched a counter-unmanned-aircraft-systems marketplace under its Drone Edge initiative. The NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) says it competed and selected 16 solutions from Alta Ares, Axon Enterprise, Northrop Grumman, OSL UK and Quantum Systems. Allied buyers can procure listed solutions through the NATO catalogue without conducting a new tender for each purchase.

What the selection covers

NCIA says its multi-award framework considered four reference scenarios: protection of a single site, a wider area, a border segment and a moving convoy. The selected equipment spans fixed, transportable and mobile approaches. NATO says the capabilities have previously been deployed in Allied countries and Ukraine, but the announcement does not identify which of the 16 configurations served where or give comparative test results for each.

The framework agreements are valid for about 18 months, with possible extension. NATO also allocated €3.1 million for further testing requested by nations or commands. That testing allocation indicates that selection is not a final performance verdict across all operating conditions.

Procurement boundary

A marketplace listing and framework award make procurement easier; they do not mean all Allies have placed orders, received systems or accepted them into service. NATO did not publish per-solution quantities, prices, delivery timetables or a full list of product variants in its public account. Later national orders, deployment records and test reports will show how the marketplace translates into fielded protection.
