Supplier-reported counter-UAS trial

BAE reports live trial of integrated BATS counter-drone system

A two-week Scottish trial connected sensors, human decisions and electronic or gun-based responses; BAE says operational deployment remains a future step.

BAE Systems announced on 1 October that it had completed a two-week live trial of its Anti Threat System, or BATS, in Scotland. The company says the trial exercised a complete sequence from sensing and identifying drone threats through operator decision and response using a common command-and-control architecture. BAE has not published independent test data, detection ranges or a customer acceptance decision.

The supplier describes three trial areas: fusion of multiple sensors into a shared picture, integration of electronic-warfare and software-defined-radio effects against operator-confirmed targets, and a more complex sequence that matched different threat categories with responses. It also reports an integrated gun-system demonstration. The account presents BATS as a modular software and decision layer that can work with third-party sensors and effectors, with human oversight retained.

Trial result versus fielded capability

The reported outcome supports a supplier-led integration demonstration, not an operational fielding claim. BAE says it is progressing the system towards deployment and continuing to expand its sensing and countermeasure capabilities. The release names no buyer, production order, site installation or independently measured success rate.

Follow-on customer trials and published integration results would show how this architecture performs outside the demonstration conditions and whether it becomes part of an accepted layered defence system.
